Who runs this

A small bridal boutique on South Congress

This site belongs to Aandbebridalshop, trading as a&bé bridal shop at aandbebridalshop.us. We are a physical retail bridal boutique, not an online store and not a rental house, and the shop is at 1506 S Congress Ave, Austin, Texas 78704, United States. Everything you read here is written by the people who stand on that floor.

The shop exists for a specific person. You looked at the long white rows in a chain salon and felt like you had walked into someone else's wedding. Maybe you want a suit. Maybe you want a jumpsuit you can dance in and a cape for the ceremony. Maybe you are marrying someone of the same gender and got tired of correcting the consultant. Maybe you are just a free-spirited bride who wants a gown from a designer nobody at your wedding has heard of.

All of that is normal here. It is the whole reason the door is open.

We carry clothes from independent designers and accessory makers, the kind of labels you will not find stocked in the big salons, and we sell them by appointment so there is one party on the floor at a time. The catalogue on this site is inquiry-only. There is no cart, no checkout and no payment taken online.

01How the floor is hung

Why the floor is sorted by silhouette

Most bridal shops split the room into a bride side and a groom side. We took the split out, because it answered a question nobody had asked.

A rail sorted by gender makes you declare something before you have touched a single fabric. A rail sorted by silhouette asks a better question: what shape do you want to stand in? The answer tells us far more about what you will end up wearing than any label does. Someone who loves the ivory wool suit often also loves the crepe column. Same clean line, same lack of fuss. They sit next to each other here for that reason.

Inside each silhouette the pieces hang by fabric, heaviest to lightest. Silk crepe, then charmeuse, then lace over crepe, then tulle. You can walk one rail and feel the drape change under your hand, which is faster and more honest than flipping through photographs.

  • Column

    Silk crepe · bias cut

Straight, close, no boning. Silk crepe forgives nothing. That is why we like it: the fabric tells you the truth about the cut in the first ten seconds.

  • A-line and lace

    Chantilly · crepe underlayer

Fitted through the body and easing out from the waist. This is where the Chantilly sleeves hang, and where most people who say they want something romantic end up.

  • Full skirt

    Layered tulle · corset-free

Volume without a corset. Bodice and skirt are sold separately, so a size 6 top and a size 12 skirt is a completely ordinary order.

  • Trouser and suit

    Ivory wool · charmeuse

We carry a suit in ivory wool and a jumpsuit in silk charmeuse because people asked for them, repeatedly. Anyone looking for a bridal suit in Austin starts here, and the trousers get hemmed to the shoe you will actually wear.

  • Over everything

    Tulle · hand-beaded edge

Capes, veils and hair pieces hang on their own rail at the end, because they go with every other silhouette in the room. A beaded cathedral cape looks as right over a suit as it does over a slip.

The workroom

Behind the fitting room. A silk hem being pinned on the form after a first fitting, with the shoes the client brought sitting under the table. Hems are pinned standing, in those shoes, never guessed from a chart.

02Wedding dress alterations, Austin

The alterations workroom is in the same building

Alterations are done in our own workroom at the back of the shop. Not sent out. That matters for one practical reason: the person who pins your hem can walk ten steps and look at you in the mirror. When a bustle falls wrong on silk charmeuse, we find out that afternoon, not a week later from a courier.

The work is ordinary tailoring done carefully. Hemming to a heel height. Bustles, usually a French bustle for a heavy skirt and a simple hook bustle for a light one. Taking in or letting out at the side seams where the seam allowance allows. Straps added, moved or shortened. Sleeves shortened, taken in, or removed from a gown that came with them.

Bring the shoes you think you will wear. Hem length is decided by a heel height, not a mood. The most common mistake we see is someone switching from a two-inch block heel to flats in the last fortnight. That undoes a finished hem, and on a lace scallop it can mean unpicking the whole edge.

We quote alterations per job after your first fitting, never before we have seen the piece on you. A quote given over the phone for a hem on a gown we have not seen would be a guess, and guesses turn into arguments. The alterations entry in the collection lists what the workroom takes on.

  1. 1

    First fitting

The piece has arrived. You put it on with your shoes and underwear. We pin, mark and talk through what changes, then give you the price for the job.

Typically 8 to 10 weeks before the date
  2. 2

    Second fitting

The main work is done. We check the hem, the side seams and how the bustle holds when you walk and sit.

Typically 4 to 5 weeks before
  3. 3

    Final fitting and pressing

Small corrections only. The piece is steamed, bagged and handed over. Bring whoever will be doing up your bustle on the day, so they can practise once.

Typically 1 to 2 weeks before

Ordering timeline

Order at least six months out if the piece is made to order

Four if you like living dangerously. This is the one thing we say to every person on their first call, because ordering too late is the failure we see more than any other. Most of the pieces we carry are made to order by the designer after you choose them. The ranges below are typical for independent bridal makers. Your designer confirms their own lead time at the appointment, before you commit to anything.

  1. 9 to 12 months out

    First appointment

The comfortable window. Try silhouettes, rule things out, take a week to think. There is no deposit for looking.

  2. 6 to 9 months out

    Order placed with the designer

Measurements taken in the shop and sent with the order. Many independent makers quote somewhere between 16 and 26 weeks to deliver.

  3. 2 to 3 months out

    The piece arrives

We check it against the order the day it lands and call you. Veils, combs and capes often arrive later than gowns, which is fine.

  4. 8 weeks to 1 week out

    Fittings in the workroom

Usually three. The first sets the alterations price, the last is a check and a press.

  5. Under 4 months

Tell us the date on the phone

Some designers offer rush production at a surcharge, some do not, and a few pieces on our floor can be bought as they hang. We will tell you which, honestly, before you come in and fall for something that cannot arrive in time.

03What the business does

We sell wedding clothes and alter them. That is the job.

a&bé sells wedding dresses, suits, jumpsuits, separates, capes, veils, earrings and hair pieces from independent designers, in person, at the South Congress shop. We fit them and alter them in the workroom. We do not rent clothes, we do not ship orders bought through this site, and this site does not sell anything: it describes the pieces and takes inquiries and appointment requests.

Price is set by the designer, not by us, and we tell you the number before you step into anything. Every piece in the collection carries a price basis, which says how that piece is priced. A gown at the designer's current list price. A cape by its length. A bodice and a skirt each on their own. The actual figure is confirmed at your appointment from the designer's current list, because independent makers change their prices and we would rather give you today's number than last spring's.

04Honest fit

Who we are probably wrong for

  • No

Anyone who needs a gown in three weeks and wants a choice of fifty.

We carry a considered edit, not a warehouse. If the date is close, call first and we will say plainly whether anything on the floor can work.

  • No

A party of twelve who want champagne and a reveal.

The fitting room is small on purpose. Bring the two or three people whose opinion you actually want. More than that and the person in the dress stops being able to hear themselves.

  • No

Someone shopping only by the lowest number.

Independent silk and hand beading cost what they cost. We will show you the least expensive piece that suits you and say so, but we will not pretend a hand-beaded cape can be cheap.

Reaching a person

Write, call or walk up South Congress

Every email and every inquiry form is read by someone who works in the shop, not a script. We answer by email or by phone, whichever you asked for. If the phone rings out, we are probably mid-fitting with a client: leave a message or send an email and we come back to you once the room is free.

The one next step

Book a bridal appointment

Tell us your date, the silhouette you keep coming back to, and your pronouns. The booking form asks for exactly that and nothing you would find strange.

Prices Set by each designer. The number is confirmed before you try the piece on. Alterations are quoted after your first fitting.

Questions about personal data go to the same inbox and are answered within 10 days. The detail is in the privacy notice and the terms.
